SFMTA Muni bus in front of the Cow Palace

One-of-a-kind look inside graduation for SF bus drivers at SFMTA

The operators come from all over the Bay Area — Antioch, Oakland or from the city itself — and they took the job for a variety of reasons. Muni is on a hiring spree at the moment and looking to fill out its operators budget.

Omozele Biggins started as a Muni operator 26 years ago and is now a training manager. She said that the 10-week course is split between classroom time for learning about the equipment and weeks in the field for training. She takes three students at a time for driving lessons out at the Cow Palace, where there’s a lot of space to practice.

It’s an active job, there’s a new class starting every five weeks, and Biggins is already underway with her next class of operators.

San Francisco Lowrider Car Show returns to the Cow Palace

The historic San Francisco Lowrider Council slates a great summer day in San Francisco to celebrate culture, community, and history as it celebrates “King of the Streets” 40th Anniversary at the Cow Palace, 2600 Geneva Ave. in Daly City on Saturday, August 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event starts with a colorful Lowrider Car Show & Hopping Contest and ends in the historic Mission District with cruising in full car regalia on Mission Street

There’s more than meets the eye about the celebration organizers say. “It’s important to remember that the San Francisco Lowrider Council exists due to community efforts to fight the racial injustice that made the council necessary to resist the San Francisco Police Department’s racist actions against Latinos and people of color,” said Roberto Y. Hernández, founder and president of the San Francisco Lowrider Council.

Introducing Moonjumper Alpha, a font inspired by ... the Cow Palace?

Think of the Cow Palace and a flood of old school memories surface, from roller derby to professional wrestling to the Dickens Faire and the literal livestock that inspired the name.

But since the Daly City convention hall and concert pavilion rebranded itself some time in the early 1970s, its logo has said something else: Space travel. Video games. Arcades. The Cow Palace lettering on the upper arch of the main building, with its reversible “A” and retro-futurist angles, would fit in on a Millennium Falcon control panel.

That’s the inspiration for the Moonjumper Alpha font from Ben Zotto, maker of the San Francisco street sign-inspired Fog City Gothic. It was also inspired by The Chronicle; at the end of a Fog City Gothic interview, I nominated the Cow Palace logo, “the Comic Sans of local fonts,” as a future project.

Showdown at the Cow Palace: When Evel Knievel (& his fans) fought the Hells Angels in Daly City

Evel was known for all sorts of semi-sane stunts, but even still…the ramp looked like something that had been hastily constructed by Wile E. Coyote during his pursuits of the Roadrunner. It began as a runway way up in the seats among the crowd and shot down to the arena floor for speed before ascending up again for the skyward launch.

The jump itself was doable by Evel’s standards, but perilous in an indoor setting: soar over an oddball collection of vehicles — a van, some pickup trucks and a VW bug packed into a tidy row, side by side — before rapidly maneuvering his rocketing piece of machinery into one of the exit tunnels to the concourse.

Yet, whether or not Evel successfully landed the jump at the Cow Palace that night depends on who you ask. Either he nailed it in fabulous form… or, he wiped out in such dreadful fashion that many in attendance thought he had died.

Evel Knievel's epic Cow Palace jump (1972)

Evel Knievel's epic Cow Palace jump (1972)

Since the Cow Palace opened as the California State Livestock Pavilion in 1941, it has hosted an almost comically diverse array of events — from the Republican National Convention to Van Halen, from hemp shows to gun shows, from the roller derby and Wrestlemania to the rodeo and hockey games.

But in retrospect, no event seems more larger-than-life than Knievel’s visit. He jumped 12 cars successfully on March 2, 1972, and then 15 cars with a wipeout the following day.

Knievel had performed at the Cow Palace in 1970, but that was a much smaller jump, and before the peak of his fame. When Knievel arrived at the Cow Palace in 1972, the biopic “Evel Knievel” was playing a few hundred yards away at the Geneva Drive-In.

When the show was announced, Chronicle motor sports writer Gordon Martin suggested people buy their $5 general admission tickets for the first night, because the “foolhardy” stuntman likely wouldn’t make it to the second.

Martin Luther King’s vision of love as a moral imperative still matters

Martin Luther King’s vision of love as a moral imperative still matters

King spent his public career working toward ending segregation and fighting racial discrimination. For many people the pinnacle of this work occurred in Washington, D.C., when he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Less well-known and often ignored is his later work on behalf of poor people. In fact, when King was assassinated in Memphis he was in the midst of building toward a national march on Washington, D.C., that would have brought together tens of thousands of economically disenfranchised people to advocate for policies that would reduce poverty. This effort – known as the “Poor People’s Campaign” – aimed to dramatically shift national priorities to address the health and welfare of working people.

King focused on the role of love as key to building healthy communities and the ways in which love can and should be at the center of our social interactions.

The moment of impact at “Media Burn” in 1975 — as a Cadillac rammed a mountain of TVs — was just part of the goings-on around the art event in the Cow Palace parking lot. Photo by John F. Turner

That time a Cadillac drove through a stack of TVs at Cow Palace is now a book!

Driving a finned 1959 Cadillac Eldorado through a stack of TV consoles in the Cow Palace parking lot was the easy part. Producing a book on the explosive public art intervention is what took 45 years to complete.

But art curator Steve Seid could not let go of the legend of “Media Burn,” the event staged July 4, 1975, by a pioneering San Francisco collective called Ant Farm. So after Seid retired from a career at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archives in 2016, he went encyclopedic on Ant Farm and its signature event — a crash of machines that beat both Mark Pauline’s Survival Research Laboratories and Burning Man by 10 years or more.

Seid’s work of art history, “Media Burn: Ant Farm and the Making of an Image,” was published in November as a softbound book with full-bleed double-truck images and an account of the year it took to customize the Caddy into a land rocket called the Phantom Dream Car and accumulate 40 TV sets.

The Untold Story of WWE Legend and The Creator of Royal Rumble, Pat Patterson
Patterson’s career began in 1958 in Montreal. Following this, he moved to San Francisco, where he made a name in the Bay Area for two decades. During this time, he secured the Tag Team Championship ten times with seven different partners; furthermore, he won the Legendary Cow Palace Battle Royal twice, 1975 and 1981. He met Ray Stevens in San Francisco and had teamed up with him. The duo moved to AWA in the 1970s and secured the World Tag Team Championship in 1978. The following year, the team lost the gold and Patterson made his way to WWE.

Patterson had an immediate impact on the WWE audience and took the ring by the storm. In September 1979, he secured a win at Rio de Janeiro to become the first Intercontinental Champion.

The ARMS benefit concert was a series of charitable rock concert in support of Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis in 1983. The first event took place at the Royal Albert Hall on September 20 which proved so popular with both the audience and the musicians that the decision was taken to perform 9 more concerts in the USA with the Cow Palace being blessed with a 3-night engagement all courtesy of the late-great Bill Graham.

With a stage full of Rock N Roll royalty ranging from Eric Clapton to Joe Cocker, from Jeff Beck to Jimmy Page as well as a plethora of rockstars, each night's setlist was littered with covers, originals and collaborations. After the third evening's encore, Jimmy Page said, "It was great to see Ronnie Lane again, and there was a spirit of goodwill and camaraderie between the artists that evening!"

Horse Haven: Cow Palace doubles as evacuation site during California wildfires

The Cow Palace is home to the Grand National Rodeo every October. The Grand National has been under the PRCA umbrella the last couple of years as a qualifying rodeo fro RFD-TV's The American. It has hosted the Grand National Rodeo since 1941, but because of COVID-19, this year's rodeo has been postponed.

The Cow Palace also serves as a fairground. And as part of the California fair network, one of the most important things for the Cow Palace is to be available for disasters and in time of need for evacuations.

Meet the evacuated animals of the CZU wildfire

For the past week, the 79-year-old “Palace for Cows” in Daly City has served as an emergency evacuation center for assorted livestock that have been displaced by the wildfires. The facility has now housed more than 200 animals, ranging from baby chicks to Andalusian horses. It’s a fitting assignment for the veteran venue, which was originally built in 1941 for hosting livestock shows, rodeos and other animal-oriented events, such as the circus.

The San Mateo group has been a major piece of the evacuation puzzle. Dozens of its volunteers mobilized to assist with coordination and care at the Cow Palace in Daly City, which is housing nearly 300 large animals evacuated from across San Mateo County, most from the south coast.

Nate Selpeter, owner of Sweet Farms, said “There’s a vast network of sanctuaries and also various animal rescue groups that all come together in moments of crisis. People really step up when it’s needed. ... It was a very professional and very coordinated effort.”

With the help of the San Mateo County Large Animal Evacuation Group, the animals were shuttled off to sanctuaries a safe distance from the blazes that have engulfed 78,000 acres in San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties.

Daly City’s Cow Palace offers reprieve to animals fleeing fires

As of Monday afternoon, 221 animals including horses, cows and even a white peacock were staying at Daly City’s Cow Palace after being rescued from the CZU Lightning Complex fires.

The facility got word from San Mateo County officials Wednesday afternoon that it might be needed as an evacuation site for large animals. By Thursday, the necessary preparations had been made.

Temporary horse stables were erected in the main parking lot and multiple pens for smaller animals were installed inside. A larger cow pen already existed on the property and is also being put to use.

“We were pretty ready when they called us,” said Lori Marshall, CEO of the Cow Palace. “This is what we do. We do events, we have a livestock show and we put on a rodeo so our staff is very accustomed to getting ready quickly with whatever needs people have.”

Marshall said 17 fairgrounds in California, including the Cow Palace, are currently being used as an evacuation site or as a base camp for firefighters.

DALY CITY, Calif. (KGO) -- We got a peek inside the Cow Palace on Monday which has been converted into a temporary animal shelter during the wildfires burning across the Bay Area.

So far they've taken in nearly 300 evacuated animals - but organizers say there's room for more. Organizers say this is the first time, in memory, that the Cow Palace has been used as an animal evacuation center.

Cow Palace: A 'modern day Noah's Ark' takes in evacuated livestock

Ranch owners are calling the Cow Palace in Daly City a saving grace for serving as an evacuation site for livestock and others animals displaced by the CZU Lightning Complex Fire.

Some have called it a modern day Noah’s Ark. Nearly 300 animals are being kept safe at the event center.

Mara McCain and her family have been ranchers in Woodside for 40 years. She said her family got the notification to evacuate late Thursday night.

“We have 70 goats, three llamas, nine horses, and one barn cat,” McCain said. “You wonder, how am I going to get 70 goats out before the fire gets here?”

Roughly two dozen volunteers answered the call. Many of them are a part of the San Mateo County Large Animal Evacuation Group. The organization has help more than 1,400 animals to safe shelters since last week.

“We've got a lot of volunteers out there who have just been working their hearts out,” said Kris Thoren, President of the SMC Large Animal Evacuation Group.

Shelters open for animals displaced by CAL fires

As fires continued to rage and move into more populated areas in the Bay Area, California, the Humane Society and similar animal welfare organisations are setting up more shelters to house pets and livestock, as seen on Sunday.

The Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA in Burlingame is currently housing pets and wild animals while livestock, horses and other farm animals, including Alpacas, are being housed at the Cow Palace in Daly City.

According to Buffy Martin-Tarbox who acts as communications manager for the Peninsula Humane Society, there are currently 75 animals houses at the Cow Palace, with dozens more expected in the coming days.

Local roller derby was first introduced to the Bay Area in the 1930s and the Bombers first hosted weekly bouts at Kezar Stadium before moving into our Main Arena in December of 1955 which began 19 continuous Seasons of roller derby games and tournaments. On November 26, 1989, The Chambers Brothers were scheduled to play a concert in San Francisco at a venue called the Cow Palace which was originally built for livestock expositions, was approved in the 1930s during the Great Depression.

In November 1989, there's a huge concert going down at the Cow Palace for a benefit show for the victims of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that had just hit Northern California the previous month, killing 67 and causing seven billion in damage. The concert was 12 hours long and broadcasted live on television, featuring some of the biggest names in Rock N Roll at that time: Taj Mahal, Carlos Santana, Neil Young, Eddie Money, Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills and Nash. The emcee was Bob Hope and also on the bill was the Chambers Brothers. But there was a problem: their drummer couldn't make the show.

11 Most Important American Sports Venues (WWE)

In the 1960s, Roy Shire’s National All-Star Wrestling was the first organization to make the Cow Palace a regular host of their events with stars like Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson. The venue was also crucial to the AWA’s expansion after the promotion’s split from NWA. One of the most notable moments to occur inside the arena was when WWE Hall of Famer Curt Hennig pinned Nick Bockwinkel to claim the AWA World Title.

As the venue became a premier location for sports-entertainment in the Bay Area, WWE began hosting Live Events there while WCW made it the home of SuperBrawl in ’97, ’98 and 2000. The Cow Palace’s unforgettable moments are innumerable, but few could top the emotion of the night in 2004 when Eddie Guerrero defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE Championship.

Seven Moments That The Cow Palace Made Music History

The venue has hosted rock legends and seen some of the greatest musicians to ever live play on its stage, from the Beatles to Elvis. Some moments, however, a pretty special. Here are seven moments that concerts at the Cow Palace made music history.

A month from now, the Vegas Golden Knights will make history as the first major league franchise in the Big Four leagues to make its home in Sin City, at T-Mobile Arena. Learning the ropes at my first rodeo

Daly City might be just a hop over a hill from ultramodern San Francisco, but when the Grand National Rodeo comes to the Cow Palace every year, it’s transformed into another world — one with cowgirls, prize tomatoes and award-winning pigs. I’d seen the billboards along the freeway for decades and finally decided to grab the bull by the horns and go. The experience was both everything I expected and a complete surprise.

Greatest Rodeo Picture Ever?

Recently, a small gathering of us were spending an evening of cold brew, warm spirits, good grub, and faded if slightly enhanced memories. Three of us were between hunters to guide. A few others had been invited and a couple more had more or less invited themselves. A fire pit was casting off a combination of pinon and post oak smoke on a deck that still suffered from a lack of levelness inflicted when the host and I had first attempted its construction a few years back. A few feet away, that same host was grilling buffalo loin as well keeping a constant supply of calf fries, shortbreads, and onions from the fry pot.

A Brief History of the Iconic Cow Palace

Recently, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, reported that New Japan Pro Wrestling has an initial bid on the Cow Palace in California for July 7th (the same night as UFC 226 in Nevada, interestingly enough) of this year. Completed in 1941, the Cow Palace is an iconic venue for wrestling fans on the Golden Coast. The odd name was coined by a local newspaper journalist during the Great Depression, when he was writing against using public funds to build it.

NJPW Could Be Running Another Event In The US This Year

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that New Japan Pro Wrestling officials have a preliminary hold on a date for a show on July 7th at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.

The promotion has announced that they will run March 25th in Long Beach, which sold out 5,000 seats in under 20-minutes.

Also, there have been some discussions talk the July return being in a major arena in either Long Beach or Las Vegas. The show would be on the same night as UFC’s show in Las Vegas for International Fight Week, which is UFC 226 and headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Stipe Miocic.

REY MYSTERIO APPEARS IN LONG BEACH, PROMISES TO MAKE NJPW DEBUT

Despite not being able to wrestle at the show, Rey Mysterio appeared at Strong Style Evolved last night and promised to still make his in-ring debut for New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Mysterio apologized to the fans after his bicep injury kept him from facing Jushin Thunder Liger, but he said that doesn't mean the match won't happen at some point. He gave his word that he will come back when he's healthy and wrestle in an NJPW ring, calling it something that's on his bucket list.

Will Ospreay got on the mic after defeating Liger and issued a challenge for Mysterio to face him in an IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship match. While he was doing that, Marty Scurll attacked Ospreay with his umbrella. Mysterio tried to make the save, but Scurll ripped his mask off. Liger then came back in and ran Scurll off.

Lt. Gov. Newsom Calls for Gun Show Ban at Del Mar Fairgrounds

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for a ban on gun shows and sales at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

In a letter mailed Monday, Newsom appealed to the directors of the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which operates the fairgrounds, to consider a ban at its next meeting.

“Permitting the sale of firearms and ammunition on state-owned property only perpetuates America’s gun culture at a time when 73 percent of Californians support gun reform measures,” he wrote.

Newsom, who is running for governor, said that as mayor of San Francisco he pushed for a ban on shows and sales in nearby Daly City, the site of the Cow Palace arena.

The Crossroads of the West Gun Show is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds four times a year, most recently in March, when it drew protests.

Welcome back to the EXCELLENCE IN COLUMN WRITING exclusively here at LordsofPain.net and has been since October 1998, yo. Man, what an AWFUL week of programming for the WWE this week. One of the worst RAWs of the year and that follows last week’s awful show as well. Then you have Smackdown whom everyone claims to have “won the draft” continuing that awful booking trend. Oh, and dumping more dirt on Daniel Bryan to bury him since his comeback. Rusev jobs to everyone else but can defeat Bryan? Then you have Samoa Joe, who should have potential, but Roman took out the garbage on that at Backlash.

WELCOME back to column time with Larry! Today, I am going to discuss and preview tomorrow’s NJPW Dominion 2018 event. Dominion is the next big event on the NJPW calendar, sandwiched between the BOTSJ finals and the beginning of the G1. On tap for today are some big matches, including Naito vs. Jericho, The Bucks challenging for the IWGP tag titles, and of course, Okada vs. Omega IV; it’s a hell of a card and I have a feeling that the show will see a big shake-up in regards to title changes. Feel free to make your picks in the comment section. Thanks for reading! It’s wrestling, we love it and will disagree. The only rules are “have a take, be respectful, and don’t be a dick.”

Students support Cow Palace gun show ban

Five times a year, the state-owned Cow Palace straddling San Francisco and San Mateo counties hosts gun shows. People from all over the state — and beyond — congregate at this venue, exempt from local controls on firearm sales because it is on state land, in celebration of America’s gun “culture.” Tickets are $14. Children under 12 years are admitted free.

This is wrong.

n the last few months, we have seen both the horrible effects of gun violence affecting our communities, in schools especially, and the momentous upswell of activism by students fighting to end that violence. Juice Robinson On If He Ever Plans On Leaving New Japan Pro Wrestling

Juice Robinson spent some time in WWE's developmental territory and saw a lot of people come and go while he learned his craft. Things eventually came to a crossroads for Robinson and he left NXT for New Japan Pro Wrestling.

Robinson recently participated in a media call where he discussed how former NXT Head Coach Bill DeMott helped him get a look from New Japan and it helped spark a transition of taking a chance on himself and jumping to NJPW. Since then Juice hasn't looked back but he's very happy it all seemed to work out for him.

During the call White was asked how he is preparing for the tournament, as well has his title defense against Juice Robinson at the G1 Special on July 7th in San Francisco:

“In terms of preparation we’re on tour at the moment,” White said. “If anything I don’t have the chance to prepare because I go home for two and a half days and I fly over for two Strong Style Evolved events in the UK. NJPW makes landfall in United States with show at Cow Palace

During this year’s mayoral campaign, London Breed spoke of growing up in San Francisco’s inner city, saving her pennies as a kid just to go regularly to the Cow Palace to see all her favorite WWF wrestlers in the 1980s.

On Saturday, New Japan Pro Wrestling will make its debut at the classic arena, and now-Mayor-elect Breed is trying to make one more appearance, although this time, she may wind up in the ring.

Japan-based NJPW — long one of the most respected promotions worldwide — is attempting to promote globally outside Japan. At press-time, Mayor-elect Breed is trying to alter her schedule to hopefully attend and present the promotion with keys to the city and a proclamation plaque, as they kick off arguably their most ambitious show in the United States.

HAMILTON’S PUBLIC FIREWORKS DISPLAY AT THE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS

The free fireworks display at dusk July 4th will be at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds again this year, but a road construction project on Fairgrounds Road might cause a detour for those wanting to watch. Half of the road between the Fairgrounds and Stonegate subdivision is closed and only EASTBOUND traffic is allowed. That means if you're coming along Fairgrounds Road from Hamilton High School, for instance, you can't get there. You must turn south on Kurtz Lane to Marcus Street, turn right on US 93 and then get to the Fairgrounds from US 93. The only two main routes to the fairgrounds are from US 93 go east onto Fairgrounds Road and on Old Corvallis Road go south to the fairgrounds.

Now, when you get there, two areas are available for parking. This is easy. They're the normal parking areas for the Ravalli County Fair - the north parking lot, just off Old Corvallis Road and the south parking lot at the softball fields across from the fairgrounds on Fairgrounds Road. NJPW’s popularity is expanding to a worldwide audience for fans of hard-hitting action with more story told in the ring instead of on the microphone. Avett Brothers Cancel Oregon Show After Man Enters Venue With Gun

The Avett Brothers were scheduled to perform a sold-out show in Troutdale, Oregon Saturday night, but after a man entered the venue with a firearm, the performance was abruptly cancelled. According to a statement on the band’s website, the individual set off the venue’s metal detector at the beginning of the night, and when confronted by security about the no-firearm of the venue, the man claimed that he was an out-of-state police officer and showed a badge. Security then asked the individual to wait for a manager to confirm his entry, but the man instead disregarded the security guard, slipping into the crowd.

Cody arrived and tried to make the save but was also attacked, The Tongans left as a unified force, while Cody helped Omega to his feet and embraced with Omega, ending the Cody/Omega arc and moving onto another, the Tama Tonga led portion, which many had been waiting for. Of note, Bad Luck Fale was not at the show, and most speculate that he will be aligned with the Tonga side.

Juice Robinson wins the IWGP United States title, claiming his first New Japan gold

Juice Robinson came into his United States title match against Jay White at a severe disadvantage. Mainly, a broken hand.

But that didn’t stop him from claiming the gold!

During tonight’s IWGP US title match at the G1 Special at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, not only did the champion Jay White work over Juice’s broken hand the entire night, but Juice was not allowed to strike with that hand. It was decided before the match that his cast was a weapon and punching with it would result in a DQ.

- Below, IWGP Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks talk about how they are currently on top of their game in pro wrestling and the merchandising world. The duo will meet EVIL and SANADA later tonight.

"I see the look of envy in EVIL and SANADA's eyes, they mentioned it early, 'Oh, those championship titles belong around our waist, they're more important around our waist," Matt Jackson said. "I can't help but laugh a little bit, because when you have the belts on two guys like us, we are self-made millionaires. We are the brand. It's the Superkick Party brand. We're bigger than professional wrestling, we're bigger than New Japan Pro Wrestling, and for sure bigger than EVIL and SANADA."

Jim Ross Suffers Possible Injury During NJPW G1 Special In San Francisco

The G1 Special in San Francisco was full of unexpected moments and high spots. Juice Robinson fought Jay White in a battle that popped The Cow Palace when Robinson captured the IWGP United States Title. Unfortunately, Jim Ross suffered an injury during this match.

White sent Robinson into the steel guardrail right in front of the commentary position during their contest. Ross and Josh Barnett were calling the match when the railing came at them and hit a monitor down which knocked Ross out of his chair.

More than a post office: Amado postmistress builds community

Linda Martinez recalls the days when she could sort the mail, have it all placed inside post office boxes by 8 a.m., and then eat a big breakfast at The Cow Palace before heading back to work.

Those days are long gone — today she's lucky if she gets lunch. But Amado's postmistress wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I tell my customers that I’m going to be here until I’m 120 and they’ll just have to wait until I can get to my window,” Martinez, 64, says with a laugh.

Martinez is among the best-known residents of Amado, a community 13 miles south of Green Valley that boasted 862 people during the 2010 census. The post office is technically in Arivaca Junction, just north of the Pima-Santa Cruz County line near Lakewood Estates. Arivaca Junction has about 1,000 people.

10 Things We Learned From NJPW G1 Special 2018

Back at it on pay-per-view and back in the United States after a broadly successful trip across the Pacific Ocean earlier this year, New Japan Pro Wrestling's presentation of 2018's G1 Special still carried the heft of a brave expedition for the company - even if the performers themselves won't be under similar conditions until the legendary Climax tournament itself kicks off on 14 July.

There were quiet catcalls at the company's expense upon booking California's Cow Palace, a venue bigger than their previous Long Beach locale, and the knocks proved not without merit. Despite Kenny Omega's show-closing bluster, the card failed to sell out the venue, though an impressive 6,000+ in attendance still bore witness to a show worthy of a stadium they'll inevitably one day find a way to fill.

"A breathtaking evening with NJPW. I'm taking a lil' time off from wrestling to heal my body & explore another very fun project. Thank you all. Let's meet at All In," Rhodes tweeted out the afternoon following his match at the Cow Palace. He also included a picture of his main event entrance during the show with this message.

Chris Jericho Talks Safety In Japanese Strong Style and What He Warned Will Ospreay About His Style

Following NJPW star Hiromu Takahashi suffering what appeared to be a broken neck at the G1 Special in San Francisco over the weekend, Chris Jericho appeared on Busted Open Radio this morning to address the injury and discuss pro wrestling safety amidst the Japanese Strong Style.

“I actually had a conversation with [Will] Ospreay,” explained Jericho, “and people were saying he’s gonna be the next Dynamite Kid, and I’m like ‘dude, you don’t want to be the next Dynamite Kid and this is what people are saying about you. So, these dangerous moves that you do, that you don’t need to do, stop it. You need to be working when you’re 47 like I am.’ Now, I had my share of crazy bumps, took my share of bad bumps, but as you get older, it’s the proverbial thing. I remember Nick Bockwinkle told me back in like 1992, at a TV taping in Winnipeg when he was there as a color commentator, ‘you do too much’.”

New Japan Pro Wrestling card a hit at San Francisco’s Cow Palace

COW PALACE — You have to climb a set of rickety stairs, up into a stunted second floor, to get to the backstage rooms at San Francisco’s venerable Cow Palace. These are the rooms where Roy Shire, Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson, Bobo Brazil, Roddy Piper and Bill Watts pulled on their working boots during professional wrestling’s long and storied history in the city of San Francisco.

All of those wrestlers, at various points in their career, competed overseas in Japan — an honor for any wrestler, given how the venerated athleticism and workmanship are in Japanese wrestling circles. On Saturday, it was a Japanese promotion coming over to America that filled those rooms once again.

New Japan Pro Wrestling delivered a breathtaking card Saturday at the legendary venue, in front of it’s largest U.S. audience to date, setting promotion records for the biggest venue, biggest gate and most tickets sold.

HIROMU TAKAHASHI RETURNS TO JAPAN, WILL PROCEED WITH TREATMENT

BY JOSEPH CURRIER | @JOSEPHCURRIER | JUL 11, 2018

New Japan Pro Wrestling has posted another update on Hiromu Takahashi's condition following the neck injury that he suffered at this past Saturday's G1 Special.

NJPW noted that Takahashi was able to travel back to Japan today, where he will proceed with treatment. He had been hospitalized in San Francisco after Saturday's match against Dragon Lee at the Cow Palace.

Takahashi injured his neck towards the end of the match when a Phoenix Plex spot went wrong and he landed on his head/neck as he was given the move. The match continued for a couple of minutes after that, ending when Takahashi hit the Time Bomb to retain the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.

Bill to ban Cow Palace gun shows clears Legislature, goes to Gov. Brown

SACRAMENTO — Lawmakers approved a bill to ban gun shows at the Cow Palace on Thursday, sending the legislation to Gov. Jerry Brown.

SB221, by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, would bar gun and ammunition sales at the state-owned exhibition hall in Daly City, just outside the San Francisco city limits, beginning in 2020. The Cow Palace now hosts gun shows five times a year.

Law enforcement agencies could still host gun buy-back events at the Cow Palace. The bill passed the Senate 26-12 on Thursday and the Assembly 44-31 on Monday.

Wiener said people living near the Cow Palace overwhelmingly support the ban.

Editorial: Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing decisions could reshape California

Friday was the official deadline for this year’s legislative session in Sacramento. Now it’s up to Gov. Jerry Brown to pick and choose the bills that become California law. Brown is facing many important choices over the coming days and weeks.

By signing SB10, which makes California the first state to end the cash bail system, Brown has already made one groundbreaking — and highly controversial — choice. Here’s are some of the most important bills on his desk.

California lawmakers bump gun age to 21, ban gun show, enact long arm rationing

A series of four anti-gun bills were approved late this week and are heading to Gov. Jerry Brown for signature. The measures — Assembly Bill 2888 and Senate Bills 221, 1100, and 1177 — passed the state legislature and now head to the state’s Democratic governor for further consideration.

AB 2888 would expand who can file for one of California’s Gun Violence Restraining Orders, adding coworkers, employers, and school employees to the list that currently includes family members and police. Such orders, largely pioneered by the state, have been derided as “turn in your neighbor” laws as they allow for temporary gun seizures with the accused only able to appear in court after the fact in many cases. After making it through the Assembly on a 48-25 vote in May, the Senate approved it this week 25-12.
